Shalupies

I bet you're wondering how in the world to pronounce that, aren't you? ShahLOOpeez. There you go. don't know what shalupies are? Well, I'll tell you, but you have to promise you'll still think I'm sane. My husband does not.

First, you take your basic taco salad...

Looks good, huh?

Then, you add the Smith family secret ingredient. All of my cousins do this. My Mimmie did this. I didn't know you didn't do this in other homes. It's just what we did. You add...

English peas. The big ones, not the little baby ones. And you don't warm them. You open the can, drain them, plop them in a bowl, and serve them on the table with the cheese and salsa.

Have I lost you yet? Well, how about now?

And that, my uninitiated bloggy friends, is how you eat Shalupies.

You're welcome.

Okay, I bet your family has a weird way to eat something. Please tell me that my family wasn't crazy. Sound Man, you have no say so.

Sister, it is spelled "Chalupes" and if I remember correctly our Mimie got the recipe from our Great Aunt Helen, green peas and all. But, way back then we always used those flat tostada shells as the base, not tortilla chips.

Plus - you MUST add a can of refried beans to your seasoned ground beef. (I actually do this now when we have taco salad or burritos etc. although I skip the green peas.)

When are you going to post the recipe for that delicious "Polynesian Spam" recipe? Do you remember that one? LOL!

Love you,

Sister

Ah, man...I almost correctly guessed how it was pronounced. :)

My husband puts dill pickles on his tacos. And my daughter eats tuna fish with ketchup. Boy, either one of those is enough to kill an appetite!

Sister, I like my phonetically pronounced spelling better. : )

And we had refried beans, just not in the meat.

And was that "Saucy Twist Pork Dish" you were asking about? We have actually had that a time or two...not a favorite around here. Heh heh.

I seem to remember that "Polynesian Spam" and "Saucy Twist Pork Dish" were two different recipes. I could be wrong. You sure are making me nostalgic today. :)

Zachary has never liked English peas...and I can't say that I've really ever fixed chalupes in the 8 years I've been married to Chris. We've had layered taco salad, but without the peas. I miss the old days sometimes. Life was so much simpler when all we had to worry about was the batteries running down in the cassette recorder...haha!

OK -- I will be the first to say THAT LOOKS GROSS. I think I will stick to tacos in the traditional way, no fish, no peas, no weird stuff-just good delicious tacos.

I have never heard of that before. It is funny the things people do. When I married my husband I thought it was so strange when my mother-in-law would make mashed potatoes and have wilted green onions in vinegar. They would plop some potatoes on their plate then make a big dip in the center and they would fill it with wilted onions and vinegar. Now, I love it but at first I thought they were nuts.

Good Morning to ya! I did know about the acid and the soil, I may have to try it out one summer. I would love to have some blue ones. My Maw Maw must have had some crazy dirt when I was growing up. She had every color under the sun on one bush. Crazy! Hope you have a great day!

ok - maybe ketchup? we (ok I) eat kethcup on every meat with the exception of fish and chicken. and for fish, there's western dressing. no ifs, ands, or buts. my mother-in-law has learned to just provide it as a side dish at meals. my side dish. but, that's all i've got. the peas on the taco thing was new.

btw, thanks for stopping by my blog today. & i love sound mad and kiddo's version of the loft - we totally need to do that around here!

blessings,
karin

Now why did you have to go and ruin that perfectly delicious looking taco salad with english peas? Those things are just gag inducing any way you look at em.

Glad your Mom's doing well.

I have to say this is a new one on me! It's funny how families have food traditions like this that might seem odd to the rest of the world, but we can't imagine eating it any other way. We have something called "Egg Like a Flower" that is a family favorite, involving hard boiled eggs and gravy on toast. Everyone always looks at me like I'm crazy, but it's the ultimate comfort food! :-)
