Another look...

This picture bears repeating. I don't know why I said that, but I like that phrase. Whatever. Anyway, I wanted to take a deeper look at this picture, second only to my koala picture in my favorite pics list.

What do you notice first in this picture? Mount Roland in the background? The grin on my face? The way the lamb is begging to be let go? I notice my hat. It's an official Akubra .

Never heard of Akubra Hats? Well, you have seen them before, I'm sure. Remember this movie?

The Man From Snowy River is one of my favorite movies. It was a favorite even before I even had the teeniest thought I might someday travel to Australia. While out shopping in Devonport, the closest city to Sheffield, I stepped into a shop that had the same kind of hats and jackets worn in the movie, and I had to have a hat. How appropriate, then, when I found my favorite its style was none other than "Snowy River." The same style worn in the movie.

I don't get to wear my hat often. As a matter of fact, I never get to wear it. The times I want to wear it (Missions week at our church, for example) my husband thinks I look too, um, non-Australian to pull it of. He's right, of course, but that doesn't diminish my desire to wear it. So, it hangs on the wall of the playroom, next to my collection of all things Australian, like my stuffed animals Taz and Janelle (a Tasmanian devil and wombat, respectively). And various post cards of scenes from around Tasmania. And maps of Tasmania. And a stuffed koala made from kangaroo fur. Oh yeah. That's another post.

Sigh...I guess I'll have to be content knowing that it's there, if I do decide to wear it one day, no matter how un-Australian I may be.

You can wear it to my house when you come for a visitar. Nobody will see you here. I won't make fun of you. If I do, it'll be just a little. The Bob used to wear a similar looking hat to do yard work and such. I think I made fun of him when he did. Okay. Maybe you shouldn't wear it down here.

If I were you, I'd be looking for any and every excuse to wear that hat.

New kangaroo born at the zoo? Wear the hat. Australian Day? Wear the hat. Eating a donut day? Wear the hat.

Since when should women take fashion advice from our hubbies?? I mean, they Rock and all, but fashion? Come on!

I would SO wear the hat on July 15th as Kimba suggested. In fact, I think you should wear it in public and have a pic taken for proof. Of course, then you would have to post it here so we can oohh and aaahh at how awesome you look in the hat! :)

Love the movie too - remember watching it as a little girl and being amazed at the impressive camera angles (probably one of the stand out aspects of that movie for it's time... I know the actual word is cinematography.. blah, something - can't spell..)

Aaahh - Jim Craig... mmm... had such a crush on him when I was about 10 :)
